Position description

The Nurse/Educator is responsible for the operation of health services, providing professional clinical nursing services and support, and offering information and education outreach to the students of Mount Allison University. The Nurse/Educator is a Registered Nurse in New Brunswick, committed to the health and well-being of students and the professional standards of the Nursing Association of New Brunswick.  The Nurse/Educator works both independently and as a team member reporting directly to the Director, Accessibility and Student Wellness regarding health care services and health issues impacting students at Mount Allison University.

The Nurse/Educator performs the duties of a Registered Nurse in the Wellness Centre, which is achieved through:

  • Provision of nursing care to students including appropriate triage, treatment and follow up as per New Brunswick’s Nursing Standards
  • Liaison with physicians in collaborating, supervising, and supporting therapeutic plans for individual students.
  • Maintenance of confidential records and documents on individual students, and on the functioning of the health services component of the Wellness Centre.
  • Provision of health education/promotion/prevention to students independently and/or in collaboration with the Wellness Centre team.
  • Coordination and liaison with health professionals to provide a physicians clinic and alternative/holistic services.Supervision and support the day-to-day activities of the Health Services area of the Wellness Centre.
  • Performance of other related duties, as required.

Position Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of common health issues for late adolescents and young adults, including disease processes, communicable diseases and the effect of lifestyle choices on health.
  • Skill to perform nursing assessment, treatment and referral as appropriate to scope of practice and competency level for students presenting to health services, including students with asthma, diabetes, minor injuries, and other medical conditions or those seeking medical testing, screening, or advice.
  • Follow nursing standards set out by the Nursing Association of New Brunswick and health services.
  • Act as a resource for students, triage and refers medical emergencies as appropriate.
  • Skill to counsel students in health related areas such as prescription drug use, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, obesity management, and other health or wellness related areas.
  • Provide information on complementary health care methods such as homeopathy, naturopathy, exercise, yoga, meditation and chiropractics, and respectfully support the right of students’ choice.
  • Coordinate/ Participate in clinics for prevention of illness and disease such as influenza clinics, pap testing and /or other prevention clinics recommended by Public Health.
  • Support health and wellness related groups and activities for students.
  • Supervise and direct the responsibilities of the student health intern position.
  • Liaises with the University’s Student Affairs professionals, such as counsellors, dietician, and others involved in the health and wellness of the students.
  • Consult with other medical/health/wellness professionals in providing service to students.
  • Refer and advocate if necessary for students requiring medical care other than that provided by the Wellness Centre to other health care providers, or to other community based health service agencies.
  • Maintain contact with and knowledge of community and university resources.
  • Be aware of and sensitive to the cultural needs of a diverse student population.
  • Co-ordinate operation of health services and, with health services staff, maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
  • Maintain current and accurate statistical information in regards to usage of health services.
  • Develop and update the health policies (clinical and administrative) which govern professional practice and coordinates a professional practice review committee to review policies of the health service of the Wellness Centre;
  • Participate, as requested by administration, in the development of University policy as it pertains to the health and wellness of students.

Qualifications/skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing, with a minimum of three years experience with a young adult population in health promotion and disease prevention setting.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in a wide range of initial or primary health services especially in triage and prevention services.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in adult education and learning principles.
  • Advanced training or post-graduate education is an asset and would be favourably considered.
  • Registered member of the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (or eligible for registration)
  • Current CPR and standard first aid
  • Good communication skills, cultural sensitivity and awareness, and knowledge of community resources. Familiar with the university environment.
