SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University has introduced a new Bachelor of Commerce — Aviation in conjunction with the Moncton Flight College.

BComm_AviationThe new degree option will combine aviation training with business studies through the University’s Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies/Commerce Department. The partnership builds on the success of the Bachelor of Science in Aviation, which has been offered by both institutions since 2008.

“Aviation is a fast-growing field and requires many skills gained through a liberal arts education such as critical thinking, team building, and digital literacy,” says Dr. Jean-Paul Boudreau, Mount Allison University President and Vice-Chancellor. “The Moncton Flight College is a world-class flight training facility. We are pleased to continue to work with them and offer this new Bachelor of Commerce – Aviation degree option and experiential learning opportunity to our students, helping them prepare for future careers in the aviation industry.”

The Bachelor of Commerce – Aviation was approved by Mount Allison’s Senate in October and the two schools recently signed a new connected articulation agreement. The program will begin accepting students in Fall 2020.

“The global demand for pilots is at an all-time high. This new program will prepare the next generation of pilots for flight management and to be leaders in the cockpit and in business settings”, says Mike Tilley, CEO of Moncton Flight College. “We are thrilled with the expansion of our partnership with Mount Allison University.”

Aviation students in the Bachelor of Commerce study a variety of business areas including accounting, finance, marketing, and management. They will begin flight and ground school training in their second year of studies with one-on-one instructor training and flying taking place at the Moncton Flight College campus.

In both the Science and Commerce programs, aviation students:

• complete more than 200 hours of flying

• receive hundreds of hours of ground training

• learn about navigation, airplane instruments, aviation regulations, and weather

In conjunction with their degree, students also earn their Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with multi-engine class and Group 1 instrument ratings upon graduation.

The interdisciplinary BSc in Aviation program was established by Mount Allison and the Moncton Flight College in 2008. Starting with just two students, the program now attracts students from across Canada and internationally and has more than 120 students enrolled and a post-graduate employment rate of nearly 100 per cent.
