Mount Allison statement on events in Ukraine

04 Mar 2022

The following message was sent to the Mount Allison University community on March 3, 2022

Over the course of the week, we have been watching events unfold in Ukraine and globally with great concern.

The Mount Allison community supports Ukrainians — those in Ukraine and those with Ukrainian connections around the world — during this time of upheaval. The bravery and steadfast resilience of the Ukrainian people and their leaders is a model to the world. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represents an attack on democracy and it is important to stand behind this sovereign nation.

The University will be raising the Ukrainian flag on campus today and you will see blue and yellow lights displayed in front (Main Street) of the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts as a sign of support and respect. A sacred fire will be held at the Indigenous Ceremonial Space on campus on Friday, March 4. Elders in Residence William and Connie Nevin will be onsite at 1 p.m. to offer prayers. Additional details are posted on the events calendar (mta.ca/events).

Community members can support the Ukrainian people directly through the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal, set up by the Canadian Red Cross.

A reminder that there are support services in place for Mount Allison students, faculty, and staff:

Students: Counsellors in the Wellness Centre are available by appointment or drop-in. E-mail: wellness@mta.ca for an appointment or visit https://mta.ca/current-students/health-and-wellness/mental-health-and-wellness/mental-health-services for a list of other available resources.

Faculty and staff: The Employee and Family Assistance program (Morneau Shepell) is available 24/7 to provide support — 1-844-880-9142 or https://www.workhealthlife.com/

Our thoughts are with all affected, especially those with family, friends, and relatives who are being impacted.

Mount Allison University stands proudly in full solidarity.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jean-Paul Boudreau
President and Vice-Chancellor
