The Pierre Lassonde School of Fine Arts at Mount Allison is pleased to welcome Meera Sethi as the 2024 Pierre Lassonde Artist-in-Residence — the third artist-in-residence since the program was created in 2021. Sethi will develop a project on campus over a six-month period.  

Sethi is a contemporary visual artist with an interdisciplinary,  intuitive, and research-based practice that moves across painting, drawing, fibre, illustration, performance, and social practice.

Her work sits at the intersection of the subjugated body and histories of cloth with a particular focus on South Asia and its diasporas.

She is interested in the making, wearing, and disposing of cloth; clothing as a form of self-expression and resistance; and the ways textile is constituted over vast geographies.  

Sethi will be delivering a public talk to introduce her practice on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts Room 302.

Through her work, she delves deep into the ways we understand and appreciate the self, the body, cloth and clothing, including its histories, resonances, and possibilities. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the Royal Ontario Museum and the Wedge Collection. She has exhibited nationally and internationally.

She is the recipient of multiple awards from the Toronto, Ontario, and Canada Arts Councils, the Textile Museum of Canada, the University of Toronto, Inter Access, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

She lives and works as an immigrant-settler in Tkaronto (Toronto, Canada), the traditional territory of the Anishnaabe, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, and Mississaugas of the Credit River.
