Statement from Mount Allison University on the Passing of Justice Murray Sinclair
Mount Allison University joins the nation in mourning the loss of Justice Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe senator and judge who led Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The campus flags have been lowered to half-mast in honour of Sinclair’s life and legacy.
Through his pioneering work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he revealed the painful truths of the residential school system, inspiring all Canadians, including our University community, to continue the path toward reconciliation.
During his time in the Senate, he championed Indigenous rights, inclusivity, and justice at the highest levels of our country. His belief in education as a pathway for change "Education got us into this mess, and education will get us out," he once said resonates deeply with educators and institutions like ours.
As we honour his memory, let us be inspired by his work and recognize our responsibility to carry his vision forward. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him personally.
