Biography

Andrew Wilson is a professor of religious studies at Mount Allison University. Trained as a textualist and a cultural critic, he has an enduring interest in the ways in which Christianity continues to circulate in contemporary cultural contexts. His guiding principle of “Together we’re smarter!” has as much influence on his approach to teaching religion as it does his broader vision of integrated learning communities. As a teacher he brings together normally separate categories such as popular culture and religious doctrine in order to break down artificial boundaries, shift perspectives, and create new and productive connections. In the community he collaborates with a range of stakeholders to bring community engagement to the forefront of pedagogical development.

Teaching in the areas of Western religions, Andrew’s courses explore the ways in which the legacies of Christianity continue to influence contemporary issues and identities. His courses include Religion and Popular Culture (RELG1661), Faith and Doubt (RELG2831), Christianity (RELG3601) and Re-inventing the Sacred (RELG4601).

His recent publications include a co-edited journal volume on New Materialism for the Bible and Critical Theory (2020) and a book on postmodernism and biblical studies: Critical Entanglements: Postmodern Theory and Biblical Studies (Brill, 2019).

Andrew has always been active in the wider community and contributes to the university’s Community Engaged Learning Program. He currently chairs the Sackville Early Music Festival and Sackville 20/20, a community based educational support and advocacy group .

Andrew was honoured to be a recent recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship (2021), Canada’s highest recognition of educational leadership and teaching excellence.
