Degree audit forms
Map your degree requirements with degree audit forms
Degree audit forms can be used by students in any year of study to track their progress towards meeting program requirements, and to show the courses that they will need to take in the future.
Only graduating students must submit audit forms to the registrar’s office. Remember, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure requirements have been met to graduate.
Instructions on how to use degree audit forms
Please ensure that you select the appropriate form for your program as listed in the academic calendar you are following for your program of study.
For degree programs, please ensure that you complete all sections of the degree audit form and include courses in which you are currently registered that will complete your degree requirements:
- 120 credits
- 3/4000 level credits as required for program (BA = 36 credits; BASc=30 credits; BComm = 39 credits; BSc = 30 credits from 3/4000 level Science courses)
- Distribution requirements applicable to your degree program
- Courses completed for your major, minor, honours programs
- BA, BASc, and BSc students are not required to list elective courses (courses not included in the major(s), minor(s), honours or distribution)
- For major/honours programs that require complimentary credits chosen in consultation with a program advisor, please seek guidance from the appropriate program advisor for your major area of study.
For certificate programs, please ensure that you complete all sections of the certificate audit form and include courses in which you are currently registered that will complete the 18 credits specific to the certificate program you are completing.
For graduating students
To graduate, degree audit forms must be completed and returned to the Registrar’s Office.
For May graduation
- degree audit forms due by Oct. 30 for students applying for May graduation
- certificate audit forms due November 15 for students applying for May graduation
For October graduation
- first week of September for students applying for October graduation
Please print the appropriate degree audit form, complete it, and return it to the Registrar's Office at the Wallace McCain Student Centre — 2nd floor. Forms may also be sent as an attachment via email at graduation@mta.ca.
Degree audit forms will be verified against transcripts to ensure that requirements will be fulfilled based on courses completed and current course registration.
Students applying for graduation must be registered in all of the courses that are required for program completion when submitting the audit form(s).
Degree audit forms only require a signature of approval from the program advisor for BA major and honours programs that include complementary courses chosen in consultation with the program advisor.
An email sent to advisor@mta.ca from the appropriate program advisor is required ONLY under the following circumstance:
- Any variances in the prescribed program as listed in the academic calendar under which you are completing your program requirements, that have been approved. A record of approved variances should have been e-mailed by the appropriate academic department head or dean to the registrar or academic advisor
If you do not know who the program advisor is for your major/minor/honours/certificate, please refer to the list of program advisors.
STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO RETAIN A COPY OF THEIR AUDIT FORM(S).
If you have any questions concerning completion of degree audit forms, please contact the academic advisor at advisor@mta.ca or at 506-364-2269.

Degree Planning
Evaluate your degree progress in Self-Service
Degree Planning, accessed through Self-Service under the Academics heading, is designed to help students and advisors evaluate progress towards completion of degree requirements.
Degree Planning is NOT an official degree audit and is not used in any official capacity by the University to verify degree compliance or confirm satisfactory completion of degree requirements.
Questions or concerns about degree and program requirements can be directed to advisor@mta.ca.
What can I view using Degree Planning?
Degree Planning is based on program requirements listed in the academic calendar. It defaults to the academic calendar under which you were admitted (or re-admitted following a period of hiatus from studies.)
You can use Degree Planning to view:
- requirements for your degree and program(s)
- which major/minor/honours program you are enrolled in
- which academic calendar you are recorded as following
- how many credits you have earned and how many credits are remaining
- courses you have taken and courses you are registered for
- your cumulative grade point average
- which program requirements you have met or are expected to meet based on your current course registration
- which courses remain for you to take to complete requirements
- approved variances in your program (for example, the replacement of one specified course with another)
- how many courses you have completed toward a program you are interested in studying by using the “What if I changed my program of study?” function (evaluation reports for a program in which you are not registered)
- how many courses you have completed toward your program of study following a different academic calendar (using the “What if I changed my program of study?” function)
Degree Planning is a tool for general program guidance only. There are limitations to this system and it may not accurately reflect your progress towards meeting degree requirements.
What can it not show?
Degree Planning does not have the capacity to apply non-designated transfer credits in the evaluation of program requirements. Approved variances must be manually recorded by the academic advisor. Degree Planning cannot be used for specially approved majors/minors. Degree Planning cannot account for regulations concerning credits counted in common between major/minor or double major programs.
Please report discrepancies in the information provided in Degree Planning to degreeaudit@mta.ca
Degree maps
Degree mapping can help assist you as you plan your degree by year and choose your major, minor, or honours program.
Bachelor of Arts degree map
Note: 120 credits are required for a degree. A normal course load is 15 credits per term for each of the fall and winter terms.
Year 1 (fewer than 24 credits completed)
- Aim to complete distribution requirements by the end of first or second year
- Think about a possible major area of study when selecting introductory level courses that are prerequisites for future courses in that discipline or area of study
Year 2 (24 credits successfully completed)
- If distribution credits have not been completed, it is recommended that they be completed by end of second year
- Select courses that will lead to a major and minor
- Declare your major(s)/minor(s) by end of second year, prior to registering for third year courses
Year 3 (54 credits successfully completed)
- Major(s)/minor(s) must be declared before you register for third year courses
- Select courses for your major(s)/minor(s) following the program requirements and keeping in mind the BA requirement of 36 credits from 3/4000 level courses
- If applicable, consult the program advisor regarding course selection for complementary courses as required for your program
- If you intend to pursue honours, you must declare your intention to complete an honours degree by December (see Academic Calendar sections 10.10.4 and 11.2.20 for honours degree requirements). Eligibility to complete an honours degree program will depend on your academic performance at the end of third year and confirmation of an honours thesis advisor. Students completing an honours degree are not required to complete a minor (see Academic Calendar section 11.2.19)
Year 4 (84 credits successfully completed)
- Select courses for your major(s)/minor(s) following the program requirements and keeping in mind the BA requirement of 36 credits from 3/4000 level courses

Major/Minor
No more than nine credits can be counted in common between a major and a minor. Bachelor of Science degree map
Note: 120 credits are required for a degree. A normal course load is 15 credits per term for each of the Fall and Winter terms.
Year 1 (fewer than 24 credits completed)
- Science programs require the completion of specific courses in your intended discipline during first year. Review section 12 of the Academic Calendar to determine which first year courses are required for your intended major and minor area of study, and for any upper year courses you may be interested in taking
- At the same time you are working towards your major/minor, take the opportunity to register for courses outside of your intended discipline. If you are unsure of a major/minor area of interest, this can be accommodated by making sure your first-year course selection gives you the required flexbility. Consult with the academic advisor (advisor@mta.ca) for further advice.
