Appointments and health insurance

If it is your first visit to the Wellness Centre for an appointment with the registered nurse/educator, you will need to come 10 minutes prior to your appointment in order to register.

Please bring the following:

• provincial health insurance card or private health insurance documentation
• your valid Mount A student ID card

It is crucial that we have your current telephone number and address so that we may contact you when necessary, i.e., when positive test results are received.

Contact the Wellness Centre as soon as possible if you are unable to keep your appointment. When possible, cancel any appointment at least 24 hours in advance.

Please try to be on time for your appointment. If you are more than 15 minutes late for an appointment, it may be cancelled.

All services are strictly confidential. Medical information can only be released with your written authorization.

The information you provide is confidential, with the following exceptions:

• We are required by law to report to the appropriate authorities any suspicions that a child (under 18) or elderly person (over 65) has been or is being abused.
   
• If we suspect that you are in serious and imminent danger of hurting yourself or another person, we may need to reveal to an appropriate third party enough information to help you.
   
• If you are involved in a legal proceeding, the court may subpoena our treatment records. This is a rare occurrence, but you should be aware of the possibility.
   
• Student Life values a team approach to assisting people. With your permission, staff working in different areas within this department (e.g., Wellness Centre, Meighen Centre, etc.) may consult with one another, if necessary, to ensure you are receiving the best possible care.

Please be assured that information will not be shared with family members without your consent, nor will it become part of your University record.

Before meeting with your counsellor, you will be asked to fill out an intake form on which you will provide personal information such as demographic information, health information, and your reasons for seeking counselling.

When meeting with your counsellor, they will ask questions to obtain some background information on the concerns or issues you have come to discuss with them.

Mount Allison University recognizes that health and wellness services and access to an inclusive education are essential to the success of its academic mission.

It is further acknowledged that there are several interconnected factors that encompass an individual’s wellbeing and their ability to thrive in the post-secondary environment.

To this end, appropriate health, wellness, and accessibility services are available to students with the aim to support to their academic and university pursuits.  

• Appointments with a psychologist — several psychologists in private practice offer services to Mount Allison students on a fee-for-service basis. Appointments can be made directly with the psychologists.
   
• Appointments with a dietitian — a dietitian is available on campus by appointment from September until mid-April. To book an appointment contact dining@mta.ca.

Canadian students are covered by their provincial health insurance while studying at Mount Allison, with the exception of those from Quebec.

Students from Quebec

The Province of Quebec has not entered into a reciprocal billing agreement with physicians from other Canadian provinces.

This means that if Quebec students need to access a physician while attending Mount Allison, whether it be a physician at the local hospital, community office, or clinic, or at the Mount Allison Wellness Centre, they will be requested to pay a physician fee before being seen by the physician. The receipt can be sent to the Province of Quebec for reimbursement.

Contraception management and Herpes Zoster assessment

Service fees to provide coverage for assessment and prescribing for contraception management and Herpes Zoster assessment by pharmacists will be covered by the Department of Health (Medicare) for eligible patients.

These eligible patients must be an NB resident or hold a valid Medicare card.

The coverage is for the cost of the assessment and prescribing only. The patient is still responsible for the cost of the dispensing fee and the prescribed medication and/or injection, if applicable.

For patients with prescription drug plans, the pharmacy can submit the claim for these costs and the patient is responsible for any remaining balance.

Health insurance for international students at Mount Allison University is mandatory.

International students who are studying full-time in a program that leads to a degree are eligible to apply for New Brunswick provincial Medicare coverage.

Students can receive coverage through the Mount Allison Students' Union.

Physician health care services that are not covered under provincial plans include:

• Physicals and/or medical forms (sports, licensing, travel, etc.) — $50
• Travel consultation (including multiple prescriptions for travel) — $50
• Travel immunization only (if travel consultation has been provided elsewhere) — $20
• Physician office visit without insurance — $50
